MICKEY ROURKE, "I OWE EVERYTHING TO VENICE, AND THE PULCINELLA’S MASK WILL BRING ME GOOD LUCK”

LOS ANGELES, 2/22/09 - "I owe everything to Venice and I have a special relation with
Italy and its cinema. I hope someday I can give you other satisfactions”.
These were the words of Mikey Rourke, Oscar-nominee as Best Actor for
“The Wrestler”, while receiving from the hands of Italian showman Massimo Ranieri
the “Pulcinella’S Mask” Award at Los Angeles,Italia Film Fest.
The awarding ceremony took place at the Chinese Theatre a few steps from
the Kodak Theatre where works were under way for the Oscar Night and where
photographers and journalists have welcome Rourke. The actor was in an excellent shape
(despite the sorrow for the loss of the beloved dog that helped him to overcome acute
Depression) and very energetic in view of the Oscar Night. After winning the Golden
Globe as Best Actor for his mesmerizing performance, he is also one of the favourites
for the Oscar. “The Wrestler”, Darren Aronofsky’s latest film was awarded the
“Leone d'oro” at the latest Venice Film Festival.
"This is the best film of my life,” said Rourke – “and the Award I received from
Casino' di Venezia, followed by the Leone d’Oro for the film, have been extremely
important for me. This new award from Italy is a great honour for me. I have worked
with some Italian-American directors such as Coppola and Cimino as well as with
Liliana Cavani with whom I hope to work again. It would have been fantastic
for me to be directed by Sergio Leone, but unfortunately I did not manage to do it.
The actor has also thrown a joke about the mask of Pulcinella. "I know this award;
you gave it to Stallone last year - he said talking to the producer of the event,
Pascal Vicedomini – and in fact I saw it at his place. I do remember that once he
welcomed me naked with only the Pulcinella mask on!”
