PRODUCER MARK CANTON HAS BEEN NAMED THE CHAIRMAN OF THE 12th ANNUAL "CAPRI, HOLLYWOOD - THE INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL", TAKING PLACE IN ITALY FROM DECEMBER 27th 2007 TO JANUARY 2nd 2008
CAPRI, ITALY 9/26/07 ¬ The American producer Mark Canton (300, The Spiderwick Chronicles) has been named the Chairman of the 12th edition of "CAPRI, HOLLYWOOD ¬ THE INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL", the festival of cinematic art and representative of the "made in Italy" cultural trademark, taking place from DECEMBER 27th 2007 to JANUARY 2nd 2008 on the isle of Capri.
Pascal Vicedomini and the Capri in the World Institute, with the support of the Film Department of the Italian Ministry of Culture and the Campania Region of Italy, in collaboration with Kimbo Caffè, Fiuggi Mineral Water and Chamber of Commerce of Naples, Italy, produce the festival.
³I¹m honored to have been named chairman of this highly-prestigious international event that will ring in the New Year by paying homage to Italian cinema and its traditions² said Canton. ³ Pascal and his team are lining up a stellar array of films and events that is certain to make this year¹s Capri, Hollywood the best that they have ever produced.²
Canton has been a preeminent force in the entertainment industry for over two decades, helping bring more than 300 pictures to the screen in his capacity as a senior studio executive (President of Worldwide Theatrical Production at Warner Bros. Pictures and Chairman of the Columbia Tri-Star Motion Picture Companies) and producer.
He most recently produced the mega-hit 300, based on the Frank Miller graphic novel and directed by Zack Snyder for Warner Bros Pictures which opened to record-setting box office numbers, having grossed more than $460 million worldwide and is the highest-grossing March release in the history of the motion picture business. The 300 DVD is setting sales records around the world. His next film, The Spiderwick Chronicles, based on the best selling children books by Tony DiTerlizzi & Holly Black with Mark Waters (Mean Girls) directing, is in post production for Paramount Pictures and is slated for a February 2008 release. In addition, The Ride Down Mt. Morgan, written and directed by Nicole Kassel (The Woodsman) based on the Arthur Miller play and starring Michael Douglas, is in pre-production, as is Piranha, a re-invented version of the 1978 hit to be directed by Alexandre Aja for release by Dimension Films. Canton is also developing a contemporary re-make of the Award-winning MGM musical, Fame.
A native of New York, Canton is a 1971 UCLA graduate (magna cum laude) and a member of UCLA's National Honor Society for American Studies. In addition to serving on the UCLA Board of Councilors and the Dean's Advisory Board for the School of Theatre, Film, and Television, he is Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of the American Film Institute and Founder and Chairman Emeritus of AFI's Third Decade Council.
THE EUROPEAN CINEMA LIVES
"This year the slogan of ³Capri, Hollywood² is ŒThe EUROPEAN Cinema Lives¹, demonstrating that all good cinema does not come just from Hollywood," said Marco Di Lello, minister of the Tourism and Cultural Departments of the Campania Region of Italy.
After dedicating last year's eleventh edition to the Far East cinema, the ³Capri, Hollywood 2007² aims its spotlight on the European film industry with a presentation of works both old and new by some of Europe¹s most prestigious directors.
THE FILMS AND THE PREMIERES
The final program will be announced December 20th in Rome at the Media Center on Via dell'Umiltà. The festival also will present the best Italian films of 2007, as well as organize galas for the presentation of the 2007 Capri Awards to an exciting array of filmmakers and stars.
FILM SYMPOSIUM
The popular writer/producer/director Bobby Moresco, who has worked with global superstars such as Clint Eastwood and Paul Haggis, will preside over the International Fiuggi Symposium on Producing.
