GIUSEPPE TORNATORE’S FILM THE UNKNOWN IS ITALY’S CANDIDATE FOR THE 2008 OSCAR. CONGRATULATIONS TO THE POPULAR SICILIAN DIRECTOR FROM HIS FRIENDS AT “LOS ANGELES, ITALIA”
ROME, ITALY - September 26, 2007 – La Sconosciuta (The Unknown), directed by Giuseppe Tornatore will represent Italy in the Oscars’ best foreign film category. At the commission’s eight vote, the thriller starring Ksenia Rappaport, Michele Placido, and Claudia Gerini won eight to seven over Mio fratello è figlio unico (My Brother is an Only Child) by Daniele Luchetti..
The other short-listed candidates included Saturno Contro by Ferzan Ozpetek, La ragazza del lago by Andrea Molaioli, Sole nero by Zanussi and Rosso come il cielo by Cristiano Bortone.
Giuseppe Tornatore received the Legend Award at the “Ischia Global Fest 2007“ (together with American colleague Oliver Stone), the “Nastro d’argento” award at the Taormina Festival, and the David of Donatello Award. For the Oscar he will compete with respected rivals such as the animated film Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi and Vincent Paronnaud for France, The Living by Roy Andersson for Sweden and Auf der anderen Seite (At the Border of Paradise) by Fatih Akin for Germany. The five finalists will be announced on January 22, 2008.
Tornatore’s friends at “Ischia Global,” “Capri, Hollywood” and “Los Angeles, Italia” immediately sent their good wishes and support to the Italian director in the race to become one of the five Oscar finalists.
